Item Description

If you like thick bottom strings and amped-up soloing capabilities, these Ernie Ball Skinny Top/Heavy Bottom Electric Guitar Strings are for you. These beauties hit the scene in the 70s (hence the sweet retro packaging) and have since established themselves as the industry standard for rock musicians at all levels. Artists like Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Pete Townshend have relied on Ernie Ball strings in studio recordings and in live performances for over 40 years.

Ernie Ball Nickel Skinny Top/Heavy Bottom strings offer a full, balanced mid-range sound with a nickel plated steel wrap wire around a hex-shaped steel core. The non-wound high-carbon steel treble strings are put through a specially tempered tin plating process to balance out the guitar's tone. The result is a full sound you can bend and shred with confidence.

To guarantee consistency, optimal performance and longevity, Ernie Ball maintains the highest quality control to exact specifications.

Good strings for everyday use when you don't want that perfect sound for your record

It is a classic

This is the right stuff if you want mostly normal string gauges, not too thick or thin, but still just a little bit heavier bottom than usual, to really feel that bottom strings, but still not to torture your fingers. OK to use in E tuning with no problems.
  • Long lasting good sound, not expensive, durable.
  • They tend to darken or rust very fast if you don't wipe them after playing.

Great for detuning

I use these strings on my Strandberg OS6, with a multiscale of 25.5"-25" tuned to Eb.

The low strings feel tight and sound better than strings of a lighter gauge, while the higher strings have the right amount of tension to feel good when bending.

This doesn't matter...

but I always liked the Ernie Ball packaging more than any other brand :). Those bright neon packages are just eye candy for me. I've used ernie balls since my teenage years, first learning guitar. Sounded great then, and they sound great now. They sound better than D'addario's for my preference. Brighter, and sound clearer, but I wind up using D'addario's more because they are cheaper, and the tonal quality is negligible at the end of the day.

There are a few downsides to ernie balls, in my experience. They don't last too long. The plain steel strings start to corrode even after wiping them down religiously every time I play. In about 4-5 days, there are some black rough spots. Other string brands don't do this to me. Also, the wound strings go dead (lose their zing and brightness) in about a week. If you like strings that retain their tonal character and still feel smooth, I would recommend d'addarios over ernie ball, but then again, ernie balls are brighter and clearer sounding.

Another con is that the 10 gauge has broken on me a few times simply tuning them up. Again, no other string brand has done this to me yet (fingers crossed).

Besides those cons, I have to give these 5 stars because they really are nice strings, feel nice and sound great.

ok, but not best

For me, a little bit overprice. IMHO, daddario has the best price / quality

Great strings for downtuning

I mostly play in drop D or drop C, so these strings suite me quite well. With light top strings and heavy bottom strings you get the best of both worlds, clarity for lead and heavyness for rhythm and riffs.

Only strings I use

These are just fantastic. The thick bottom really fills out chords and adds some punch to lower pulloffs. Up top, you get to keep your flexibility without ripping your fingers up. Best of all worlds. Particularly good on Stats and Teles, I also think they're perfect on semi and full hollowbody guitars. I use them on my LP too, though they're less pronounced than on the lighter bodied axes.

I discovered these in my late teens and have been using them ever since (almost 20 years later).
  • GREAT tone, long lasting.

Skinny Top Heavy Bottom

I love power chords. These are easy on fingers and they last a long time. You can strum as hard as you want and they dont seem to break. They seem to stand up aginst dirt and oil pretty well. They also keep thier shine well. For the price, why not try them.

Skinny Top/Heavy Bottom

I have an Epiphone model of the 1275 and the 6-string pick-ups were just too week. So rather than go out and load up some Burstbuckers, I decided to try these strings on it.
I'll probably still put the Burstbuckers in, but what a difference these strings made. Very smooth and powerful tone. Clean or distorted they hold their tone (no uncontrollable flapping on the bottom end).
So in a one word summary I would have to say "smooth".
