About Tim Henson

Whether through his solo work or as the lead guitarist and co-vocalist for Polyphia, Tim Henson is a modern virtuoso. He can play just about anything and often does, melding metal, progressive rock, jazz, funk, EDM and even hip-hop into a unique sonic painting. With him spearheading efforts, Polyphia has become one of the few modern prog-rock bands to break into the mainstream, parlaying viral success into multiple Billboard 200 albums and collaborations.

Henson was born in 1991 in Plano, Texas, and his eclectic list of musical influences is heard in his music. He has named Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, Eric Clapton, The Mars Volta and others as inspiration — but he uses them to create an energetic sound all his own. With over 1.25 million YouTube subscribers and a legion of concert-goers, there are many great years ahead for this rare gem.

The Guitar Strings Tim Henson Chooses

Since he was young, Tim Henson has used Ernie Ball guitar strings for his axes. On Tim’s electric guitar, you’ll find Ernie Ball Skinny Top/Heavy Bottom Nickel Strings. They’re made with the same materials and process as the timeless Slinky strings but have a 10-13-17-30-42-52 gauge pattern. This lets Tim get the brightness and bendability he needs for awe-inspiring solos while allowing a crunchy, down-tunable rhythm drive on the lower end when the music takes a metal turn or needs a darker jazz tone. Skinny Top/Heavy Bottom strings also lend themselves well to Tim’s hybrid picking style, letting him pluck the other strings without being hard on his fingers.
