Great tone and longevity
January 14, 2015
Started using Elixirs several years ago upon recommendation from a fellow bass player. Since that time I made the mistake of purchasing other, well known brands, coated strings. I won't do that again. The Elixirs last an unbelievably long time. The only time I feel the need to change them is when the coating starts getting a bit fuzzy, that's about when they start to fade. And since Elixir has improved the coating, so they last even longer, before starting to shed the coating. I've tried both ss and nickel sets and prefer the nickel. Tone is subjective, but to my ears these sound great. A bit less zingy when new compared to un-coated strings, but maintaining a nice growl... for months! And without the finger screech associated with un-coated strings. A set typically lasts me about 6 months.
Fender US J Bass and a Tobias Killer B both equipped with them. Multiple playing styles.
Pros:Warm tone, Amazing longevity, Minimal finger screech. Easier on the finger tips, if the callouses get a bit soft.
Cons: Typically twice the price of un-coated strings, (well worth it).
Tone might be a bit subdued for some players. Some say they feel too slick.
